New Year, New You!
If you ate and drank too much over Christmas and have pledged to get fit for 2015, there’s no need to rush into signing an expensive gym contract – the secret to achieving your fitness goals could be right on your doorstep.
A study published in January 2014 revealed that Britons spend £37m a year on wasted gym memberships and slimming classes they never attend. There are several reasons people lose motivation including lack of time or feeling intimidated by the thought of walking into a room full of ’gym-bunnies’, especially if they don’t feel particularly fit themselves.
Setting up a home gym doesn’t need to break the bank but it does have to be well-planned to ensure you make the most of it. The first step is to find an area of your home where you can exercise in peace – it can be difficult to enjoy a workout and remain motivated when you’re surrounded by screaming kids or overflowing laundry hampers that need to be dealt with so you’ll need a dedicated room where you can exercise without interruption.
For most people, the ideal area is their garage and turning it into your own personal gym is easier than you think as long as you de-clutter the current space, organise the items that need to stay in there and make sure you have efficient storage systems for other items you need to store so you have sufficient space for your equipment.
Do it your way
You don’t have to stick to traditional gym equipment as finding your own personal workout style will help you stay motivated.
Recently, one of our GarageTek clients converted his garage to accommodate his Wii Fit. We helped him organise his single garage in a flexible way which allowed him to move items around until he created the perfect corner to exercise. Having a dedicated area of his home for his video gaming system made it more convenient to exercise as it’s there, ready and waiting whenever he wants to use it. As a result, he shed a stone in the first three weeks of using it!
If you decide to go down the more conventional route with workout equipment, consider looking at second hand items about six weeks after Christmas when unwanted or unused Christmas presents or equipment purchased as part of a failed New Year’s resolution to get fit, finds its way onto second hand marketplace websites, allowing you to snap up a bargain!
Get Your Garage Gym-ready
Once you have decided the style of workout you’re after it’s time to get the garage space ready. It’s important that your garage remains functional for your storage requirements as well as giving you the space you need to exercise. This sounds challenging but believe me, a bit of planning can go a long way.
Adding adjustable shelving and sturdy hooks will make room for different-sized objects and can be easily moved around to meet your storage needs by simply remounting the shelves at different heights to accommodate new items. Using multi-tool holders can also free up space and keep frequently used items close to hand. Wall cabinets can neatly conceal stored items and can make your garage neater.
You will also need to check whether you need to add more electrical outlets to accommodate any electrical equipment you may require. Make sure they are installed evenly so even if you decide to change the layout you will still have access to them.
Add those final touches
You’ll be surprised how much more willing you will be to spend time in your home gym once you’ve given the space a makeover and made it look more appealing. A properly finished and hard wearing floor will instantly make your garage feel more useable. There are a number of durable and easy to clean solutions on the market for garages ranging from environmental-friendly interlocking tiles made from recycled PVC to resin floors that are available in a variety of colours.
If your garage doesn’t have any windows, you can consider putting up mirrors as they will help make the room appear larger.
With a little bit of planning, rearranging and the right storage solutions, your garage could find a whole new lease of life as your own private gym saving you money in gym membership and making those New Year’s fitness goals all the more achievable!
