Finding a trustworthy tradie – a short guide

Finding a qualified and trustworthy professional is not an easy task. There are many to choose from, making it all the harder to decide who to go with.

No one wants to spend too much time calling several tradies to get quotes and discuss job details, and book the best one for the job.

Three years ago, I found myself in the exact same position. I was moving in to my new apartment and needed a cabinet maker. Finding a trustworthy tradie who could do the job at the right price, was a frustrating and challenging process. It led me to start Oneflare, an online marketplace where Aussies can find local service providers. By being in the industry and working with thousands of small businesses across Australia, I’ve learnt a few tips along the way.

Here are three obvious, but rarely followed, steps to finding and hiring the best tradesman for your project:

1. Be clear and specific:

Before you start speaking to prospective tradesmen, create a clear and detailed brief of your project. Don’t be afraid to include estimated budgets, ideas, colour preferences and even a list of materials. Aim to be as descriptive as possible but be willing to consider to the opinion of qualified tradesmen too.

2. Seek references:

After you have carefully considered the ratings, reviews and portfolio photos of the tradie’s past work, double check the validity of license registrations and insurance policies. Go one step further and actively seek references from the business itself. You can even consider contacting previous customers to get an idea of who you are hiring and how they work.

And, don’t compromise- if the tradie doesn’t respect your time and space, it’s safe to say there are other areas where corners are being cut. Draw the line and hire another professional, it’s never too late.

3. Paperwork is key:

If you’ve decided to hire a professional, guarantee your safety by keeping a record of any receipts, dates and written agreements. Avoid advance payments and try to get all quotes in writing. You can never be too safe!

Steps one through to three are not exhaustive but will ensure you have a smooth journey with the tradesman you intend to hire. Choose wisely and when you’ve successfully hired a trustworthy tradesman, don’t forget to share your experience with others!
