Taking home security more seriously

According to new research, more than half of the UK population are very concerned about their homes being burgled, but the majority are only taking very basic measures to protect their properties. To prevent and even deter burglars from breaking and entering into a property, it’s important that homeowners invest in quality security products that can offer the home the highest levels of protection. With this in mind, Martin Smith, product manager at IronmongeryDirect, offers advice on the best products available on the market.

The home is a place where people have the right to feel safe and secure – a lot of time and money will have been invested in a property to create a comfortable and happy environment. Unfortunately though, burglaries do happen and research from IronmongeryDirect has found that over a third of people (34%) have had their home broken into in the past five years.

With 53% regularly worried about having their home broken into, it is surprising to discover that the majority of homeowners aren’t actually doing enough to protect their properties. According to the research, most homeowners are only using basic security measures such as locks (87%) and security lights (52%), rather than more robust measures.

This highlights the need for homeowners to take their home security more seriously and invest in security solutions that offer higher levels of protection. One of the reasons why homeowners may not be investing in better security measures is because it can be difficult to know where to start. With so many different products available on the market, it can be hard to know which products offer the best value for money and are the most secure.

Protecting the entrance points

When it comes to entering a property, the door is the main point of access for residents but sometimes people forget it is also the most obvious point for opportunistic burglars. People spend a lot of time and money securing other access points, and sometimes the most obvious place is often forgotten about. In fact, research shows that in two thirds of break-ins, burglars gain access to properties via an open door or window.

While locks are the most effective solution to protect a door, in order to restrict unwanted access, it’s important to invest in a high quality, robust lock designed to withstand physical attacks, rather than just a basic one.

To ensure that the lock provides the highest levels of security it should comply with recognised British Standards. One of the best locks on the market is the Yale Nightlatch as it complies with these standards and also comes highly recommended by the Metropolitan Police, giving homeowners further peace of mind that they are investing in a quality product.

The Yale Nightlatch offers high levels of protection due to its latch bolt that automatically deadlocks when the door is closed. The lock is specifically designed to resist any attempts by burglars to enter the property because its deadlock feature means it can only be opened with a key. So even if a burglar was to smash a glass panel next to the door to get to the lock on the other side; they would be unable to open the door from the inside. The lock also cannot be picked or drilled open, offering further peace of mind.

It is also recommended to use the nightlatch in conjunction with a recognised British Standard deadbolt that offers hardened steel plates to resist drilling and a 20mm deadbolt throw, which is the length that the deadbolt extends from the door edge.

Ward off intruders with alarm systems

Protecting a property’s entrance points is vital in preventing intruders from gaining access, but unfortunately on occasion the burglar may be able to gain entry by other means. For this reason, homeowners need to invest in other forms of protection – it is not enough to just have a lock fitted to the front door. The installation of an alarm system is one of the most effective methods of security when someone has already gained entry, as it can immediately alert homeowners of a break-in and can also potentially scare off the intruder.

There are some alarms on the market that can alert the property owner by telephone when it is activated. A particularly popular product is the Yale Easy Fit Telecommunicating Alarm, which can be set to store three phone numbers. Once the alarm has been activated, the system will call each number in a specified sequence to alert of the break-in so it can be dealt with quicker.

Monitoring the outside perimeter

While the installation of CCTV systems is often perceived as one of the most expensive forms of security, it may come as a surprise to many that there are affordable solutions on the market. CCTV has been cited as one of the best forms of protection for a property. Just the presence of CCTV cameras is enough to make burglars think twice about entering a property as it increases the chance of them being caught in the act and makes it easier for them to be identified.

There are products on the market that can offer around the clock surveillance, with images ready to view at any time – these can be viewed both live and also played back at a later date. With its pre-installed 500GB hard drive, the Yale easy fit HD Camera CCTV kit can record continuously so that footage can be replayed when needed and thieves immediately identified, making it a highly recommended product. The kit comes with two high-resolution cameras but the system can be expanded with more cameras if homeowners want to monitor a wider area.

The risk of burglary is a real and lasting concern for the majority of homeowners, and when it does occur, it can really affect how safe people feel in their homes for a long time after. For this reason, people need to be taking the security of their properties more seriously and investing in quality products, which will offer the highest levels of protection. Taking the steps to prevent a break-in and lower the opportunities for burglars to enter uninvited will give homeowners peace of mind and a better night’s sleep.
