Marta De Sousa was born in Cascais, Portugal a coastal town 19 miles west of Lisbon and home to many of the exiled royal families of Europe. She grew up surrounded by the family property business and is often described by her relatives as someone who “held a hammer before having her first pyjama party.” Her passion for property started from a young age and De Sousa pursued Economics at UCL (University College London) before working as a business reporter for both Bloomberg News and CNBC.
Marta speaks four languages and has always been an active person; she played national basketball for 8 years in Portugal and in 2002 she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with her mother – a personal goal of theirs.
Having received extensive first-hand experience from construction to creative interiors, Marta knows her way around a building site. She set up her international property development company, Lux Reality 6 years ago, and her projects have won numerous awards. Marta specialises in intelligent design, with a focus on renovating and restoring period properties across London. In all her projects De Sousa combines traditional skills with modern techniques, to create environmentally conscious homes, equipped with cutting edge technology.
With a portfolio of over 20 properties including bespoke celebrity homes, Marta relishes the challenge of managing a team of 20 builders, along with an architect and an engineer. It may be a male dominated industry, but De Sousa refuses to compromise on her femininity, despite the hard hat. Never forgetting her roots, she sources materials like stone from Portugal to build her properties and often travels between her home town and the UK.
Unlike an estate agent, Marta puts her money where her mouth is by studying the market extensively and taking a strategic approach. She know the best places to buy from, what needs to be done to sell a property, and also how to execute it.
Marta is frequently called upon to share her expertise and has been featured extensively in the national press. Her TV work includes Homes Under The Hammer – BBC1, House Hunting – BBC3, and London Live. She is a regular guest on BBC London 94.9. Marta has just completed a renovation of her own home on Prebend Street, Islington, London which she shares with her partner Joanna and their dog Peanut.
Marta will be writing a regular column for My Renovation Magazine.
